Mirna Amaya

Mirna Amaya is a seasoned mental health practitioner and the owner of Unlock Your Mind Psychotherapy and Consultation Services LLC, located in the District of Columbia. She is licensed in both Washington, DC and Maryland. Her expertise includes helping children, individuals, couples, and families with trauma, mood disorders, anxiety, acculturation challenges, and life transitions.

Born in El Salvador, Ms. Amaya moved to Washington, D.C. at age five. She is passionate about multicultural identities and storytelling. As a bilingual mental health therapist, she collaborates with community agencies to serve diverse populations, including Latinos, immigrants, African Americans, and the LGBTQ+ community. Her professional objective is to educate the community on the importance of mental health. She addresses essential topics like domestic violence, acculturation, parenting, and trauma.

Ms. Amaya is a pillar of the community. For over a decade, she was a mayoral appointee on the D.C. Board of Professional Counselors. She served two years as Interim Chair, where she helped establish licensure regulations for Graduate Student Licensure and Addictions Counselors in Washington, DC. She co-founded the Down Syndrome and Metabolic Disease Parent Support Groups at Children’s National Medical Center, helped establish the clinical mental health program at Mary’s Center, and participated in radio shows discussing Post-Partum Depression. Ms. Amaya also served as the Dean of Community Relations and Student Services at Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School, facilitating student access to licensed therapists. Ms. Amaya has also supervised counseling interns and licensed individuals seeking LPC credentials.

Ms. Amaya holds the National Certified Counselor (NCC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) credentials. She also supervised counseling interns and licensed individuals seeking licensure. She is a member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), the DC Mental Health Counselors (DCMHCA), and the American Counseling Association (ACA). Mirna Amaya loves dogs and has a 13 year old Shih Tzu name Lola. She is family-oriented and enjoys learning about different cultures, traveling, dancing, baking and action adventure movies. She is a long time DC resident and loves the city’s rich cultural diversity.
